How to Get a Gmail Account

October 1, 2006

Gmail is an online email service by Google, and its main attractions are no banner advertisements and the huge amount of storage space for email they give you: 2700 MB as of January 28 2005. However, it’s still in the beta stage of development (that is, not available to the general public yet), and getting an invitation can be somewhat tricky.

Steps

  1. Sign up with your mobile phone. Since the release of Google Talk, the new Google IM client, Gmail is now open to anyone without the need for an invitation in the US. The catch is, Google will send you the access code to your mobile phone. They do this as a verification process and to reduce spam. If you don’t have a mobile phone, proceed to step #4.
  2. If you do have a mobile phone, sign up for an account here.
  3. Enter your cell phone number and then a code. There will be a link that says, "If you already had a code sent to your cell phone, click here." (You might even find it helpful to click on that link before you enter the things on the previous page, as it has FAQs.) When you get your text message, click there and you will be told to enter your cell number again and to enter the code that you have received on your phone. Now, you have a Gmail account!
  4. Ask a friend or relative or, if you know any, ask a Google employee or other Gmail user for an invitation to Gmail.
  5. Visit http://www.bytetest.com which has given away thousands of free Gmail invitations donated by Gmail users. Bytetest was down, but it is up again. Another good source is the Gmail Invite thread on FatWallet You can also try the discussion page for this article.
  6. If you are a member of a tech-related board, try posting there if you are not new to the site.
  7. Ask for an invitation at the the Gmail news message board or the Spanish language GoogleMania. It appears that people are responding.
  8. Email wikiHow community members and ask for an invite. Some community members who still have invites left include desalvionjr, francohecht, neo.naresh, and pro_atthe_game, all addresses end in @gmail.com, eg: (usernameabove)@gmail.com.
  9. Pay up. If you can’t get one for free, consider buying an invitation to Gmail on eBay, (this is for an emergency or if you are desperate, this is not legal!) if you don’t know anyone who can invite you to join. Go to eBay and search for "Gmail invite*" and you will find many invitations for sale for about $1 each. It’s your choice whether it’s worth it or not. (Remember that more than likely, sometime soon it will become a public service and totally free.)
  10. Read the Gmail invitation for instructions on how to sign up. Once you receive your invitation, follow those instructions and you will soon have your Gmail account running.

Tips

  • Try a couple of the above techniques until you get your Gmail invitation. If you don’t see any invites available at the links mentioned in step 5, try again a in a few days.
  • Each Gmail account owner gets some number of Gmail accounts of 100 invites at a time. Google periodically gives its Gmail Subscribers additional invites, but this is a random occurrence and cannot be counted upon.
  • Don’t bug those who have GMail invites for one. If you don’t get one soon, don’t be bothered. There is a very good chance that you will get one.
  • If you get an invite, use it up quickly. If you don’t use your invite soon, it will declared invalid.

Warnings

  • Many Gmail addresses have already been taken, so the address you want may not be available.
  • Unfortunately, a standard Google account does not currently allow you to access Gmail, despite the claims on the main page for Google Account.
  • You can only get 3 Gmail Accounts from a particular mobile phone.

Create a Gmail Blacklist

August 19, 2006

Keep getting email you don’t want to see in your inbox? Create a Gmail Blacklist.

1. Go to Contacts, click on Groups and create a new group (let’s say “Blacklist”).

2. Click on “All contacts”, check the email addresses you don’t like and add them to the group (at the bottom of the window).

Each time you send a message to someone not in your Contacts list, Gmail will automatically add the person for you. So if you didn’t reply to a person, you’ll have to add the mail address in the last step.

3. Go to Groups / Blacklist and click “Compose to group”. Copy the text from the “to” field.

4. Paste it in their Javascript coverter (show on the original article)

5. Create a new filter. Paste the text obtained above in the “from” field, check “Also apply to…” and “Delete it”.

Keep in mind if you want to add more addresses, edit the filter by appending ” OR newaddress1 OR newaddress2 … OR newaddressN” in the From field.

Also, if you only want one or two address, it maybe more worthwhile to just create just the filter described above, by adding the address in the From field. If you want to block many addresses, it’s time consuming to do this manually by copying each email address from the contact list.

Shutdown your computer without Clicking

June 28, 2006

shutdown

Now that I’ve told you how to speed up your shutdown time, I’m going to tell how to hit the shut down button easier, and furthermore, with using your hands. Here’s what you do:

1. Right click on the desktop, and click properties.
2. Click on the Screen Saver tab and click on the power management button.
3. Click on the advanced tab, and under where it says “When I press the Power Button on my computer”, set to “Shut Down” (It’s usually set to this by default, but check just to be sure).

That’s all there is. To shut down your computer, just press the power button. And if you wish, you may press the button with your feet. Keep in mind that this is only supported on newer motherboards, so if you don’t see the “When I press the Power Button on my computer” option, you won’t be able to do this. For you I recommend One Click shutdown (which does require the hand). But for everyone else, this is a great way to shut down faster.

An egg a day keeps cancer at bay..!!!

June 25, 2006

Eggs could protect against heart disease, cancer and eye problems, says a new study disapproving the assumption that eggs were bad for cholesterol levels.

Bruce Griffin of the University of Surrey analysed 30 egg studies and found that people who consumed one or more eggs a day were at no more risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease than non-egg eaters, reported the online edition of Daily Mail.

Egg yolks contain cholesterol, but nutritionists now know it is the saturated fats in food, not dietary cholesterol, that raises blood cholesterol levels, a risk factor for heart attacks.

"To view eggs solely in terms of their dietary cholesterol content is to ignore the potential benefits of eggs on coronary risk factors, including obesity and diabetes," Griffin says, describing eggs as super food.

One egg provides 13 essential nutrients, all in the yolks. It contains the nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin, which could help to prevent or even reverse the age-related eye problem macular degeneration (MD).

Egg whites contain albumen, an important source of protein, and no fat, the researchers say.

Eggs are an excellent source of B vitamins, which are needed for vital functions in the body, and also provide good quantities of vitamin A, essential for normal growth and development, the researchers said.

An egg’s vitamin E content protects against heart disease and some cancers; there’s also vitamin D, which promotes mineral absorption and good bone health.

Eggs are rich in iodine, for making thyroid hormones, and phosphorus, essential for healthy bones and teeth.

Girls who eat an egg a day in their teens may give themselves additional protection against breast cancer in later life.

It is the essential nutrients in eggs, such as amino acids, vitamins and minerals that may be responsible for this protection.

Eggs are also low in calories - a large egg contains only 75 calories and 5 grams of fat - and other research suggests they can help you lose weight.

Health experts used to recommend a maximum egg consumption of three a week to avoid a rise in blood cholesterol levels. But since evidence has shown that it is saturated fat intake that affects cholesterol, advice has changed.

Now Britain’s government’s Foods Standards Agency (FSA) says there is no limit as long as they form part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Compress PowerPoint Pictures

June 20, 2006

These days, we use PowerPoint presenations for all sorts of things. A few years ago (before I had a Flash Drive) wanted to put one on a floppy. It didn’t fit. Little Did I know that you could compress the pictures. Here’s how you do it.

To Compress PowerPoint In Versions Before 2007:

2. Click File Menu and then Save as
3. In the save dialog box, click the Tools drop down menu
4. Select Compress Pictures
5. Select All Pictures in document
6. Select Web/Screen unless you need to be able to print the presentation in high quality.
7. Select Compress pictures and Delete cropped areas of pictures

Control Your Moves

cannot-move

The WFG Bonus is a new feature I’m starting the will apear 2-4 times a week in addition to daily posting. Enjoy!

Okay, you can stop the “Stayin’ Alive” music, I wasn’t refering to those moves. What I was refering to was moving files in Windows. Often when moving files you’ll get a message saying that a file is locked and cannot be messed with. But there’s a way around it. When dragging a file in Explorer, you can control the operation that will be performed when you release the mouse button by doing one of the following:

  • Hold the Control key to force a Copy
  • Hold the Shift key to force a Move
  • Hold the Alt key to force a Create Shortcut

And there you have it, an easy way to force moves in Windows. You may now turn the Bee Gees back on, if you wish. Today’s regular post is below.
